The player can continue in one direction on a planet and appear in the position that they began in, implying that these planets are spherical. These planets' appearances are determined by their biome, size, and current distance from the player. When on the surface of a planet, nearby planets within the currently occupied star system can occasionally be seen. According to SteamSpy, there are also approximately 3,172,227 copies of the game currently in existence on Steam (bought games and games activated via key) as of April 1st, 2018. There are 12.667 quadrillion planets able to be generated within the game currently, with 422.22 quadrillion planned. These coordinates act as seeds to the game's internal random number generator, and as such, will always produce an identical planet when used. These elements include a planet's terrain, layers, biomes, sub-biomes, weather, gravity, difficulty, plants, trees, and the appearance and behavior of its fauna.Įvery planet has unique coordinates in the navigation console. Almost every element of a planet is procedurally assembled by the game's engine. They are colder than most planets also, so night times can get dangerous.Planets are the primary location of gameplay in Starbound. They do tend to have higher quantities of ore, but not as much as you might find in an Asteroid Field.
They tend to have wildly varying gravity, and their surface can either be soft dirt or quite hard rock. Moon - Moons are smaller than most planets so you can walk around them much quicker.Stepping even briefly into them will poison you for a significant period of time, so use caution when near any green fluid. Often times arid planets pools of water that are green and are in fact highly poisonous. Arid - These planets tend to be plain, without any real defining features, aside from the acid water.

Forest - As one might expect, this planet is full of vegetation. The rock is also very hard, making mining slow even with drills. Proper survival gear must be used if you expect to mine here. The issue is the severe cold and lack of oxygen. Diamond seems to be everywhere, and after 15 minutes it isn't uncommon to have 200+ Diamond ore. Asteroid Field - Not a planet, but still a spot where you can land, the Asteroid Field is very rich in ores. You won't find an abundance of ores here, and there will be little vegetation to harvest. Savannah - This biome is fairly dry and barren.Tundra have very soft surface materials and are very easy to mine from due to this, so the risk of freezing is often worth the reward of easily obtained ore. Night can get even colder, so when out and about make sure to bring plenty of heat sources. Tundra - Covered in snow and ice, this Biome is very cold and can be dangerous in the beginning due to freezing temperatures. There are various kinds and each will have different properties associated with it. The Biome represents the type of planet you are travelling to. The starting sector will be threat level 1, with X Sector having levels 6-10. As you climb in difficulty, you will also begin to find better ore, or larger deposits of lower quality ore. The lower the number, the easier it will be. The Threat Level of a planet acts as a difficulty rating.
